Musical Director: Peter Taylor

Peter Taylor

Peter took over Hallam Choral Society in September 2004 and is working hard with them to raise their profile as a choral force to be reckoned with in Sheffield!

Born in Solihull, Peter began his training with church choirs at an early age. In 2003 he achieved his Post-Graduate Diploma in singing with Adrian Clarke at the Birmingham Conservatoire. He also has a BSc in Environmental Geosciences from Sheffield University.

Peter is Artistic Director of the University of Sheffield Singers’ Society, and conducts their main chorus. As Musical Director of Hallam Choral Society he has led them in numerous performances of varied works from right across the choral repertoire from Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, and Handel’s Messiah to Carter’s Benedicite and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

As a baritone soloist, recent performances include Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St. John Passion, Britten’s The world of the Spirit, Charpentier’s Te Deum, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, Gounod’s Messe Solennelle St. Cecila, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse and Paukenmesse, Handel’s Messiah and Dettingen Te Deum, and Faure’s Requiem. Peter has appeared as a soloist in venues across England including Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.

In opera, Peter has twice performed the role of Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and created the role of Georges Bracque in Slater’s Violin and Pear in Line. He has also appeared as the Badger in Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, conducted by Stephen Barlow and directed by John Fulljames. He was for several years a chorus member with Stanley Hall Opera in Essex and performed with them in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Rossini’s La Pietra del Paragone, and Verdi’s Falstaff.

Peter has a great love of Lieder and Art Song and regularly performs recitals in and around Sheffield and Birmingham. He fills the rest of his time teaching singing at SLP College, Leeds where he prepares young singers for a career in Musical Theatre, and in Sheffield for Birkdale School and for the Milsom School of Music.
